Susan Posnick Part Three: ColorEyeDefine

More amazing stuff from Susan Posnick.

L'Oreal HiP Kohl Eyeliner: Maybe Not for Novices

The first time I used this product, I had a problem with it. I didn't apply it very well, and some product ended up in under my contact and irritated my eye pretty badly.

However, practice makes perfect with this applicator, and the more comfortable I got with it, the more I liked it. I've always liked a stiff brush for my liquid eyeliner, and many of the same benefits apply for a powder liner. If you apply the hard applicator at an angle and drag it along the eye, you will get a beautiful, traditional kohl line that can be built on for more depth. The pigments are nice and dark, just the way I like them, and even on the lighter colors like gold, they don't get lost on the eye.

To reduce fallout, which is a problem with any powder liner, in my experience, make sure to tap the applicator wand well against the bottle before pulling it completely out.

The Never-Ending Search for a Lasting Eyeliner: L'Oreal Infallible Never Fail Eyeliner

I'm always looking for a good liner that doesn't make a huge mess on my eyes. And that can be hard to find! I was recently asked to try L'Oreal's Infallible Never Fail Eyeliner, and I really like it. It claims to stay put for 16 hours, and I have put it to the test several times over. It really stays, and it doesn't smear, flake, or otherwise do naughty things. Infallible Never Fail Eyeliner comes in black, black-brown, and brown.

What is really cool about this product, though, is the built in sharpener and smudger. The smudger, in particular, is really interesting. It's not really a sponge, and I'm not certain exactly what it is, but it smudges your liner to perfection. It really makes smokey eyes easy, and the black that I used is darkest black. Gorgeous.

Normally, I'm not a huge fan of drugstore liners, because I need them to last, and I need them to stay put, and I've had a hard time finding one that works. This is the first that I've come across that actually works, and at this price point, I plan on buying one of each color. I'd be thrilled if they came in more colors, but I won't complain with the ones I have.

More Mineral Makeup Goodness: L'Oreal Bare Naturale Mineral Eye Liner

Here is my disclaimer: I'm not into mineral makeup. I tried it when it first came out, and it was an absolute disaster - instead of a beautiful coverage, it made my face look worse than it did before makeup. My pores looked larger, everything looked cakey, and I couldn't get it off fast enough. Plus, I've never been impressed with the color selection, since everything always looked neutral, and I'm not much of a neutral girl. So I'm always kind of "meh" about any kind of mineral makeup line.

However, this particular eyeliner might just change my mind. I tried L'Oreal Bare Naturale Mineral Eye Liner in Defining Bronze, and I was surprised at how pigmented it was. It didn't take much to create a beautiful solid line on my upper lash, and it was easier to use than I thought it would be.

The included brush isn't bad, but if you have your own angle brush, you may prefer using that. It was a little stubby for me, I couldn't seem to get a good handle on it, although the quality was okay, especially considering that most brushes included with product are crappy, this one was actually useable.

But back to the color: very vibrant. The powder form works for me since I will often use powder shadow as a liner anyway. Once again L'Oreal is shocking me with their pigments, though. It was dark and I didn't have a bunch of fallout down my cheek at all, which was surprising as well.

This is an eyeliner that I would personally invest in, especially given the price point on it. It's nice and pigmented, you can find it just about anywhere, and it's easy to use.

Today's Eye: MAC's Silversmith Mineralize Duo

I was looking around to see if this particular Mineralize was still available from MAC, and when it wasn't, I remembered that I grabbed it from the Cosmetics Company Store when I was at the outlet mall recently. If you haven't been to a Cosmetics Company Store, what are you waiting for? Amazing deals on Estee Lauder, MAC, Bobbi Brown and Origins. I loved it.

Anyway, I used only those two shades, plus my Chanel eye pencil in Blue Jean, which, unfortunately, was also a limited edition this past spring. Because I'm lazy, all that is on my lashes is a couple of swipes of Lash Injection by Too Faced.

It's Been Around Forever, I'm Only Just Now Trying It: Bobbi Brown Long-Wearing Gel Eyeliner

I am a huge fan of cream eyeliners. I love liquid liners too, and I will even confess to a certain nostalgia for a fantastic pencil. But Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner is beyond fantastic. Super easy to apply with an angled brush, it goes on smoothly and stays put all day long. The color is dramatic without being over the top, and it came off easily with eye makeup remover. One of the best pots of liner I have ever used.

I personally love Espresso Ink, but you can get this in many different colors including Black Mauve Shimmer Ink, Black Ink, Black Plum Ink, Bronze Shimmer Ink, Chocolate Shimmer Ink, Cobalt Ink, Granite Ink, Graphite Shimmer Ink, Hunter Ink, Indigo Ink, Ivy Shimmer Ink, Mahogany Ink, Sapphire Shimmer Ink, Sepia Ink, and Violet Ink. All of which sound like tattoo ink colors, don't they?

I'm not alone in my love for Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner, either. It has recently been awarded: "Elle" ‘Genius Award’ (April 2008), "In Style" 'Best Beauty Buy' (2008), and "Allure" ‘Reader's Choice Award’ (2008).

Retails for $21, and can be found at your local Bobbi Brown counter, Bloomingdales, and Amazon.

Beauty Event at Nordstrom + What I Bought at the MAC Counter

Nordstrom's is having yet another beauty event that forced me into spending over $100 at the MAC counter. Seriously!

With every $100 purchase, you receive the following:

  • Bare Escentuals® bareMinerals® Face Color in Pure Radiance (0.02 oz.)
  • Bvlgari ‘Eau Parfumée au thé blanc’ Oshibori Refreshing Towel
  • Clarins Instant Smooth Perfecting Touch (0.13 oz.)
  • Donna Karan Cashmere Mist Body Lotion (0.2 oz.)
  • Ed Hardy by Christian Audigier Eau de Parfum Spray (0.05 oz.)
  • GoSmile Advanced Formula B1 Tooth Whitening Ampoule
  • Kinerase® Intensive Eye Cream (0.1 oz.)
  • NARS Potent EFA Cream (0.24 oz.)
  • Pangea Organics Facial Cleanser—Egyptian Calendula & Blood Orange (0.1 oz.)
  • St. John Signature Eau de Parfum Spray (0.05 oz.)
  • Shiseido ‘The Makeup’ Pre-Makeup Cream SPF 15 (0.21 oz.)
I don't see any sort of ending date on this event, just a note about how it's available "while supplies last." If you are visiting the Norfolk Nordstrom, you best move yourself on in there, because people were snapping these things up.

What did I spend $100 on? All MAC, of course. Every single liner in the Starflash collection, Orpheus, Raven, Feline, and Mystery. LustreTwin in Red Flame/Orange Flicker (which is so beautiful I can barely bring myself to wear it), Mineralize Eyeshadow in Odd Couple from Electro Flash, and Mineralize blush in Gleeful from the Sonic Chic collection.

Time For Another Trip to Sephora

There are some great new products out at Sephora these days. The one I'm most excited about is Kat Von D Rock 'n Roll Eyeshadow Duos. It looks like they come in a nice array of colors and I'm dying to try them out. I'm already a big fan of her Kat Von D Autograph Eyeliner (although Rimmel Liquid Eye Liner will always have my #1 spot).

Also coming out is Stila Backstage Beauty Eye Shadow Palette - The Red Carpet Look. This looks like a fantastic combo for creating fall and winter's smoky eyes. This palette was actually designed for Marchesa's Fall 08 collection and includes both matte and shimmer shades, which makes me unreasonably happy. I love my shimmer, but I'm ready for some new looks.

Also in stores is the new Sephora by OPI line, which I've written about before. I can't wait to get in there and pick up a few shades - they look fantastic for fall.

Happy shopping!

Eye of the Day

I'm still in Colorado, and the wedding was last night. Needless to say, I'm a bit tired and couldn't muster up a lot of energy for eye makeup today. But I've been inspired by the teal eyeliner craze lately, so I picked up Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Electric, which is an aquamarine blue. There is only one shade on my lid (I told you I was lazy today), and that is Woodwinked by MAC. The lashes have Lorac Lotsa Lash Mascara on them. I'm still enjoying this mascara.

Product Review: Too Faced Lava Gloss

I'm usually not much of a black eyeliner girl, although I've always kept my eye out for a good one. When you need a black eyeliner, you don't want the one that you have to warm up with your Bic lighter to get it to go on smoothly. Remember that? You know you did it when you were 14.

Well, you can put your Bic away. Too Faced's Lava Gloss in black goes on super smoothly and has amazing wear. I've been using mine almost every day, and really putting it through the paces. I've been working 10 hour days, and most of my eye makeup isn't passing the test. Lava Gloss, however, hangs in there quite well, but isn't difficult to get off at night. A quick swipe with my Sephora Eye Makeup Remover, and it's gone. While I don't normally like paying $16.50 for an eye pencil, this one will last me for a long time and really is worth every penny.

My Sephora Haul

Dear blog, I haven't neglected you. I have been out of town doing much work stuff in places with no internet connection! I did, however, manage to get myself to Tyson's Corner Galleria and do some serious Sephora shoping. Here are a few things I managed to pick up:
I really adore their makeup primer. I considered briefly getting the tinted version, but ultimately decided against it. I always thought primer was just a gimmick, but it really does help with lines and pores.
This is just cuticle oil, but oh so important. I have a tendency to bite at my cuticles, so I was told to be religious about using a cuticle oil. I figure this pen is perfect to put in my makeup bag in my purse to have on hand.
I ended up choosing the Sephora brand over the Nars brand for a bronzing oil. I liked the Nars, but I couldn't see paying $60 for it. I really like this spray oil for when you're going out and need that little extra shimmer. It smells like monoi oil too, although I don't know if it really has monoi in it.
Eye makeup remover. I keep searching and I keep looking....oh, wait. That is a song, isn't it? Anyway, I'm always looking out for a good eye makeup remover. That Diorshow can be hard to get off, especially combined with a liquid liner. So I thought I'd give Sephora's FACE line a try.
The Sephora brand nail polish. A steal at $4. I love this color, too. It's a deep rose with a gold shimmer. Goes well with the body glow oil above.
Next comes my new eye makeup from Urban Decay. This one is apparently one of their popular shades and is called Midnight Cowboy, so I thought I'd give it a try. Be warned: it has a LOT of glitter. Big glitter! But the color is just about perfect.
This is Urban Decay's Green Goddess. Love it. Very shimmery, not so much glittery.
And finally my Urban Decay 24/7 eye pencil in Shocking. I think. I can't remember. But I adore it. I'm all about blue eyeliner this summer, I think. Especially with coppery lids.
And that is it! I'll have more indepth reviews of these items soon
