Beauty Bubbles: More on the 2000 Calorie Lash Plumper
Product Review: 2000 Calorie Extreme Lash Plumper
I'm all about a volumizing mascara. I have my favorites, but I'm always willing to try a new one just to see if it gives me the thickness that I'm looking for. I just don't get excited about lengthening formulas, but start talking about volume and you have my complete attention.
I had the opportunity to try the 2000 Calorie Extreme Lash Plumper, and I liked it. The brush is a plastic one that helps build volume, and the black formula is nice and thick without too much clumping.
I could keep talking about it, but I figured that it would be helpful to show some pictures. Here is my lashes in their natural, boring state (and not often seen in public, thankyouverymuch).
Now here they are with three coats of the 2000 Calorie Extreme Lash Plumper:
And here my eyes are open:I liked the results. I thought it delivered excellent volume, and it was easy to remove with basic non-waterproof eye makeup remover. I would probably pick it up in the waterproof version, because when I'm dealing with allergies, my mascara has a tendency to get messy.
2000 Calorie Extreme Lash Plumper is available at CVS and Ulta, I'm told. It retails for about $9.99.
Product Review: Max Factor Vivid Impact Lip Color
I had the opportunity to try out the Max Factor Vivid Impact lip color recently, and now I must rave.
I've gotten a bit disenchanted with drugstore brand lipsticks recently, because it seems as if I am forever layering it and trying to get the level of pigmentation that I am used to with my MAC lipsticks. While it may not be fair to compare lower end brands with MAC, I'm always looking for a bargain, and in the Max Factor Vivid Impact I think I've found it.
I tried #28, Rose Rage. It's a nice mauve, nothing terribly special, and not really something that I would have picked out myself. However, that being said, I've discovered that it makes a really great everyday lipstick, one that works perfect with a nude or natural face. Putting it on is very easy - it glides right on and provides lots of moisture. In fact, it feels similar to one of my favorite lip balms that I'm putting on all the time! I'm not used to lipstick that gives that much hydration, so that is a bonus. Plus, the color is beautiful, pigmented, and lasts for quite some time. While I wouldn't classify this lipstick as long-wearing, I figure if I'm going to be putting lip balm on all the time, it wouldn't hurt to put a nice color on instead.
Here is a quick photo of me rocking the Rose Rage:
While I can't find any Max Factor products in my area, I'm told that you can find it at Ulta and CVS. They retail for about $9, which is well worth it.
Pat McGrath Makes a Fantastic Look for Max Factor
Pat McGrath is a world-famous makeup artist, and is currently the Global Color Cosmetics Creative Design Director for Proctor and Gamble. She consistently puts out some amazing looks for the brands, including Cover Girl and Max Factor. This time, she created this look for Max Factor and their new spokesmodel, Giselle Bundchen. As we all know, the smokey eye comes back big in the fall and winter, and this one is just a touch outside of the traditional smokey eye, enough to really make those eyes pop.
Here is what she used:
- Blend the violet shade from Vivid Impact Eyeshadow Duo in Sultry Sage around the eyes, extending the color at the outer edge.
- Highlight the inner eye corners and brow bone with White Frost from Domino Effect Vivid Impact Eyeshadow Duo.
- Groom brows with No Color Mascara.
- Define lashes with Stretch & Separate Mascara in Rich Black.
What do you think? Will you try it?
Need a Light, Blendable Blush That Doesn't Overwhelm Your Wallet? Max Factor Colorgenius Blush
I'll admit it: I'm not much of a blush person. Oh, I use it every day, and I seem to have a few of them (although they don't come close to the number of eye shadows I have). But I don't know much about contouring, or how to properly apply it so that my cheeks suddenly become my best feature. I tend to stick with simple things, like one color blushes. However, I stepped out of my comfort zone with Max Factor's Colorgenius Blush, and I'm glad I did.
This is a tri-colored blush made out of mineral ingredients and ultra-fine pigments. Each color in the compact can be worn on it's own, or used together for a more dramatic look. I have used it a couple of different ways: I swished my brush all over all the colors and applied it that way, and I've also used each color seperately as a blush, contour, and highlighter. The colors worked well together, but that's just more effort than I usually want to put into my cheeks on a daily basis. Using all the colors together worked just as well.
Those of us with sensitive skin or even problematic skin will love this blush for it's oil-free minerals and emollients for soft application. There are three color combinations, Roses, Peaches, and Spices, so girls of every color will find something that works for them.
Max Factor Colorgenius Blush can be found at most mass retailers at a price of about $8.50.
Is It Weird to Have Highlighting Mascara? Not So Much
Don't go thinking that this is a traditional colored mascara. It's really not - it is a highlighting mascara. It offers an interesting top coat over a traditional mascara color.
Interesting, no? Max Factor Vivid Impact Highlighting Mascara is certainly interesting! I've tried both 24 Karat Brown and Blazing Black and actually really like them both. Here is how it works: you apply the basecoat (black, brown, or blue base) to your liking (you know me, I personally do about three coats), then use the highlighting top coat which adds dimension to the lashes with it's iridescent pearlescent formula. You can make the highlighting color as dramatic as you like, although I find that just a hint of color is really all I need.
The basecoat mascara is a good one. The brush is typical of what we're seeing on the new mascaras - a plastic brush with short bristles for maximum seperation and minimal clumping. Max Factor is calling this their iFX brush, and claiming that it helps make your lashes look 70% longer than no mascara at all. I don't know about that statistic, as I think most of those are just about unprovable, but it did add a great deal of volume AND length to my lashes, which is very important for me.
The highlighting top coat is fun to play with. It's lighter, not as pigmented, and truly meant to add highlights versus color, so don't be afraid of the crazy shades that you see on the package. Like any new product, you will have to play with the highlighter a bit to get exactly the look you're going for - increase the highlights for a dramatic look, or just lightly brush it on for an everyday look. I haven't used it for dramatic looks, but I can tell you that I've received a lot of compliments on my eye makeup when I brush just a bit of highlighter on it. Not enough to change the color of my mascara, just enough to add a bit of interest.
My favorite is Blazing Black, because I'm all about an inky mascara, although 24 Karat Brown will work well for those who usually go for a more neutral look. I find that 24 Karat Brown mixes well with my brown shades such as my LORAC Croc Face Palette.
While it won't replace my daily Diorshow Waterproof Mascara, I will be keeping it around for those fun looks that you always seem to need every now and again.
Max Factor Vivid Impact Highlighting Mascara is easily removable with soap and water or a good eye makeup remover. You will be able to find it at most mass retailers for about $8.99.
Loose Pigmented Eyeshadow Goes Mainstream
Loose pigment eyeshadow has long been a staple of makeup addicts everywhere. MAC is probably best known for their amazing pigments, although many people claim that working with them can be daunting.
Enter in Max Factor and their new line Vivid Impact Eye Shadow. This is a double ended loose powder eye shadow that delivers bold color with an easy application. The flexible applicator is key to the entire experience: it can be used to apply the loose powder all over the entire lid or you can use it to line the eyes and create a dramatic look that draws attention to the eyes. It is even easy to use under the eyes - the applicator is pointed as well as soft, so using it is a breeze.
What I liked best about this formula, aside from the applicator, was the pigment. It is rare for me to find a drugstore brand that actually has the level of pigment that I'm used to working with, and Max Factor Vivid Impact Eye Shadow certainly fits the bill. I have Emerald Coast and Two Cents, and all four colors are bright and vivid. They are also extremely easy to blend (which is why so many love loose pigmented shadow versus compressed shadows) using either the applicator or my standard eyeshadow brushes.
Max Factor Vivid Impact Eye Shadow comes in ten amazing combinations and can be found at most mass retailers for about $5.49. I think this would be a great introduction to working with loose pigment shadows without spending a fortune.
Experiments with Emerald Coast
I'm really having fun playing around with the new Max Factor Vivid Impact Eye Shadow Duos. This one is Emerald Coast, and it's a bright blue/green combo.
I started with MAC Paint Pot in Groundworks, and used the blue from the Eyeshadow Duo. In the inner corner of each eye I brushed the green in, blending it well with the blue. Then I took my blending brush and lightly went around the entire eye, going underneath to pull it all together. I decided I needed some sort of highlighter towards the brow bone, so I used my new MAC Colour Forms Richmetal Highlighter in Rose Boullion. I did a very thin black line around the entire line with Too Faced Lava Gloss Eye Liner
just because my day isn't complete without some sort of actual eyeliner. And because I was just feeling this whole blue/green combo, I did one coat of Make Up For Ever Lash Fibers
then added my under-used Chanel Inimitable Waterproof Mascara in a teal color that is no longer available, unfortunately. Then I finished off the eyebrows with my Urban Decay Brow Box
. Love that thing.
Cover Girl's Firecracker: FOTD
I normally wouldn't even play around with an eye shadow palette that features white, medium-dark pink, and lime green. Those are not colors that I usually wear, but you know what? I need to break out of my comfort zone. Someone mentioned to me the other day that I was only wearing neutrals lately, and they are right - when you invest in that much of Chanel's summer collection, you really want to wear it all summer long. But today I was in the mood for something a bit different, and this fit the bill.
I used Cover Girl Eye Enhancers 3 Kit Shadow, in Firecracker for this look. I used the white all over the lid, the pink from the lash line up to the
crease, and the green as a liner on the top lash line and the bottom. Then because I thought it was very mod looking, I took my Rimmel Liquid Eye Liner
in Noir (black) and did a medium thick line right at the base of my eyelashes on the top. Then a coat of Make Up For Ever Lash Fibers
, and then two coats of my new Max Factor Vivid Impact Mascara in Blazing Black. As a finishing touch, I used Benefit Cosmetics Miss Popularity
in each corner of my eyes, blending it with the green from the Cover Girl palette. What I really needed to finish this off was a cream pink lipstick, but looking through my lipstick bag, I see that I don't have a single one that would fit my total mod look going on. What does that mean? Yes, it means that I should probably head to a makeup counter. After all, one cannot be without the proper lipstick, now can they?
As a side note, I'm really into matte eyeshadows and creme lipsticks and nailpolishes right now. Don't take my word for it, but I suspect that you're going to be seeing a lot more of it - shimmer has been popular for several seasons and I think the pendulum is swinging the other way. The Cover Girl Eye Palette is completely matte, there is no shimmer to it at all, and I found myself really liking it.
Thank you to the random seller on ebay who is letting me use her photo of the Cover Girl eye palette. I forgot to take one, and I will replace it with my own just asap.
A Max Factor FOTD
It's casual day today. I mean, clothes-wise. It's never casual day when it comes to my makeup. Must feed the addiction, you know.
I started with MAC's Paint Pot in Groundworks. Then I broke out Max Factor's Vivid Impact Eyeshadow duo in Two Cents. The lighter shade went all over the lid and the darker shade went in the crease. I blended it with my standard shadow brush and applied Kat Von D Autograph Eyeliner in Turbo Lover. Love that stuff, although it's not the type of liquid liner you can smudge afterward. It's all about the precise line.
Next, I grabbed my Max Factor Vivid Impact Mascara in Blazing Black. I decided to put a coat of my Make Up For Ever Lash Fibers on first, and I'm glad I did. Because, truly, that makes every mascara better. I applied two coats of the Max Factor mascara, and then one coat of the pink "highlighter" that comes with it. You can't see it, and that's okay. It's very subtle, which is exactly what pink mascara should be - no need to walk around with bright pink lashes, no matter how great Carmen Electra looks with them.
