New From Lush: Palm Free Soaps and Jungle Soap

I had no idea that Kansas City was cool enough to have a LUSH store (we still don't have one in Virginia Beach - no fair), but I happened upon one while shopping on vacation last week. Talk about happy and surprised all wrapped into one!

They have some changes and new things going on. Did you know that they have stopped using palm oil as a base for their soaps? That's right - none of the LUSH soaps have palm oil as a base any longer.

But what's wrong with palm oil, you say? Well, as part of their campaign to save the Indonesian rain forest, LUSH became aware of the devastation that the harvest and production of palm oil was causing. They then worked for over three years to find an alternative to palm oil as a soap base.

In fact, LUSH is so passionate about the cause that they are calling on other soap manufacturers to stop using palm oil and will share their information and expertise to companies who are interested in reducing or eliminating palm oil from their formulations.

So, to promote this cause, all proceeds from the new Jungle Soap will go towards the Rainforest Foundation which works with tribes to to protect their forest homes from the destructive expansion of palm oil plantations in the region. At the same time, LUSH has announced a new partnership for Charity Pot, their lotion product that has always supported important causes. They will be supporting the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA). The WSPA works with Borneo Orangutan Society to protect endangered orangutans threatened by the deforestation practices of the palm oil industry.

With all that goodness going on, how can you resist?

Lush Releases New Sugar Body Scrubs

In case you needed another reason to love Lush as much as I do, they have decided to give you one. Lush announces an addition to their line up with two different exfoliating sugar scrubs.

Like many of Lush's other products, these don't come with a bunch of packaging. If you've ever been in a Lush store, you know you can pick up their bath bombs and soap bars and use their paper bags to keep them in. It's very environmentally friendly.

The all-natural ingredients of the bath bombs includes sugar, sodium bicarbonate, and cream of tartar. According to Helen Ambrosen, LUSH Product Creator & Co-Founder, “One of the most important things to do is to keep your skin gently stimulated and maintain a healthy circulation. By doing this you’ll encourage the elimination of toxins, ensure a healthy turnover of cells and stimulate muscle tone.” Rub one of our two new sugar scrubs all over wet skin and feel them work their sugary magic, leaving you with bright, smooth and healthy glowing skin.

The first option, Sugar Scrub, includes both fresh fennel and fennel oil, which acts as a tonic for the skin. Lavender helps soothe the skin and ginger warms up the skin. This is a vegan product, and retails for $4.95.

Sugar Babe, the other new scrub, has a hard sugar outside but a soft center of hydrating coconut oil and beeswax absolute moisturizes and soothes the skin. Scented with ylang-ylang and mimosa absolute, it also retails for $4.95.

You can find the new Lush offerings at any of the 103 Lush stores in the US or online at LushUSA.

We don't have a Lush store here in Virginia Beach, but the next time I'm in Washington DC or New York, I'll be stocking up on these.

Product Review: Flying Fox Shower Gel by Lush Cosmetics

I'm a Lush fan. Every year after the holidays I find myself a Lush store (kind of hard to do, the closest one to me is about 400 miles away) and grab their biggest gift sets, and then get my second one free. This enables me to have all my amazing Lush products for the rest of the year, almost. Although I will admit to refreshing the bath bomb collection periodically through the year.

So, really, I only do major Lush shopping once a year. That is, until I went in this year to sample some of their new products (all of which I will be writing about in short order). I walked out after spending $100 with some great stuff, but also a ton of wrapped gifts free! Talk about making my holidays a bit easier.

At any rate, I hadn't tried Flying Fox Shower Gel yet, but I had heard really good things about it. The description from Lush really says it all, I think:

Lots of women would love to believe that they were Cleopatra in a past life. Chances are though that they were somebody more like Mildred. Or Bob. Fortunately, a bunch of fabulous jasmine flowers decided to reincarnate as Flying Fox shower gel. Its infinitely sexy and mysterious scent makes any shower fit for a queen. And we added some honey so you can stay sweet in case all that power goes to your head. Divine!

Divine indeed. I've never been a huge jasmine person, finding that it's often just too sweet for my taste, but this might change my mind. It's gorgeous, and certainly not a one note wonder. You don't just get the jasmine with this one. There is something else there, and it's fantastic.

Another must have from Lush.

Flying Fox Shower Gel by LUSH, from $17.45 to $24.75. Available at LUSH or Amazon.com.
