Newly Discovered Site: Rachel Ray Posts Her Faves, Includes Style

I have a friend who always watches Rachel Ray. I have no idea if she reads the magazine, but I know she catches her talk show all the time, and will come to me saying, "have you tried this? Rachel Ray loves it" in regards to self-tanner, wrinkle cream, and a host of other things.

Now she has a blog-of-a-sort where she posts all of these finds that she comes across. She covers "fun", "style," "head to toe," and "home." I personally like "style" and "head to toe". Style covers clothing and accessories and head to toe covers beauty.

Every Day Faves covers a lot of ground, and is actually quite entertaining to read. Head on over there and check it out!

Before/After Photo Contest at Misikko.com

Misikko.com knows how hard it is to shop online, so they have come up with a pretty great idea. Upload your before/after photos using your favorite hair product, and you could win one of three prizes to be given away: one $100 gift certficate to the store, and two $50 gift certificates to the store.

The idea is that the before/after photos will help shoppers make better informed decisions about the product they are considering buying. So before you purchase that flat iron, you can see how it's worked for other people, instead of just reading about it.

Make sure to upload your photos by October 31 to be considered. Winners will be notified November 3 via email.

Halloween Makeup Contest at BeautyChoice.com

Even if you don't enter a video yourself, head on over and vote for one! There are some amazing looks, and they are inspiring me to think of what I'll be wearing this year.

If you do decide to enter a video, you can win a $500 shopping spree at BeautyChoice.com. Second place receives a $250 shopping spree, third place receives a 1 inch original CHI flat iron, and fourth place receives a BaByliss PRO Nano Titanium Dryer. That's super fun!

Here are the basic rules, although you will want to head over for the full details:

  1. Create an original, 4 to 10 minute, "Hair and Makeup Halloween Tutorial Video" demonstrating how you created your Halloween look. An original look is encouraged, but not required. You can create a familiar look, or a look that you come up with on your own.

  2. If makeup plays an important role in creating your look, please be sure to provide details on how you applied the makeup in order to achieve the final result. Also, be sure to provide details on how you styled your hair as well.

  3. You may submit one or more videos. All video entries will be considered.

  4. Video submissions will be accepted through October 31, 2008.

  5. No purchase is required to enter this contest.

  6. Any video that contains profanity or any offensive material will not be considered.
Good luck!

My New Hair Treatment Holy Grail: Moroccan Oil Masque

Oh my. I don't know that there are enough words to describe how I feel about my MoroccanOil Masque.

Let me start by saying that I am a big believer in hair treatments. When you have curly, coarse, ridiculous hair like mine, it takes all kinds of things to make it behave and be straight. And even when I style it curly, I like to have just a bit of touchability to it.

Well, touchability is the key word when talking about the Masque. Just one treatment left on for about 10 minutes almost completely changed my hair. It was so soft, so touchable that I was taken aback. I have not had such results from a hair treatment in a long time. Truly, it was amazing, and I don't say such things lightly.

With continued treatment, I found that the results continued to last even on days when I wasn't using it. And you don't really need to use it that often. I'm a once a week kind of girl when it comes to hair treatments, because I don't always have the time to hang out in the shower all day and let them work.

And did I mention the good work it did with my frizz? I am the queen of frizz. After using this the first time, I allowed my hair to air dry (the true test of whether or not something actually helps frizziness, in my opinion), and I'd say that my frizz was reduced by about half. That's pretty stunning for me, given very little actually works to reduce my crazy frizz.

I was personally introduced to the MoroccanOil line by my stylist, but there are so many great places to purchase this. My personal favorite is BeautyChoice.com, and right now they are having a special: SAVE $5 on orders $25 or more. Coupon Code: SPC99056. Expires 11/20/08. Click through and see if you don't absolutely love this line as much as I do.

MoroccanOil Hair Masque retails for about $37.95, and is worth every single penny.

For the Men Friday: Tom Ford for Men Extreme

Just in time for the holidays, we're introducing For the Men Fridays, where you can get an idea of what is going on in the world of men's products. It's an up and coming field, what with even mainstream brands like L'Oreal getting in on the action! And why not? Men should get to feel just as good as we do, no?
Tom Ford for Men Extreme is fairly new on the scene. Created by my main squeeze, Tom Ford, this limited edition fragrance is supposed to be based off the original Tom Ford for Men
icon, but to be even more...more! After all, this is Tom Ford we're speaking of. He does nothing halfway. Here is the little bit of information I could get, presumably from the press release:

...reflects an attitude of impeccable style, not of rules. A masterfully blended fragrance tailored for a true connoisseur, each ingredient is chosen with discriminating taste.

A vintage Patchouli, lush Black Italian Figs, ultra-pure Persian lemons, decadent Black Truffle and rich Cedar Wood are entwined through the exquisite craft of haute perfumery.

A new icon of masculinity emerges, breaking the rules, and creating a new, gentlemanly universe in its path.

My Future Purse from Betsey Johnson

This little piece of gorgeousness over here is my next bag, also known as the Flower Power Large Hobo by Betsey Johnson.

I love all things poppy, and while it almost reminds me of Marimekko's poppy design, it's different enough to be completely funky and completely Betsey.

This will be my third Betsey bag, and none of them have been a disappointment. I love them all, and don't think introducing a new one to the mix would be a problem.

How to Wear it Thursday: The Cape

And clearly, I'm not talking about the velvet goth-style capes that we have all seen far too many of at the locan ren fair. But when you say "cape", most people automatically think of that. Then, they say, "Oh, I could never do that." Well, I'm here to tell you, you can. You absolutely can. In fact, you can and people will look at you and think you have tremendous style, because they will think that they can't. See how that works?

The secret to wearing a cape as outerwear (and really, there isn't any other way to properly wear it) is to wear it with confidence. No one else will have one on, and you will look great. The other secret to it is to watch the balance of volume. In other words, you will have a lot going on up top with the cape - keep it simple on the bottom, or you'll look like a balloon. I prefer wearing mine with some trouser-style jeans and flats or boots. Even better, my flat suede boots. But above you can see the super fun Frye ankle boots I picked out for this one.

If you're going to be stylish enough to wear a cape, be sure to accessorize your outerwear. Leather gloves are always a good thing, and don't forget a cute hat. I picked out a knit beanie/beret style, because that's what I wear on a daily basis. I also just love cloche hats, but be careful not to overdo the vintage look.

This is the type of outfit I'd wear to Washington DC while shopping in Georgetown. Casual but still classy.

At any rate, I know I do. This gorgeous Kipling bag holds Lash Injection, Starry Eyed liner, Shadow Insurance and eyeshadow duo. And it has a monkey wearing a bustier! All of this for $29.50. The makeup inside is worth over $60, and how can you put a price on a monkey wearing a pink bustier and red lipstick?

Beginning in October, the Kipling Loves Too Faced collection will be available at www.kipling-usa.com; Kipling® stores in Miami, Fla.; Garden City, N.Y.; Rockaway, N.J.; San Francisco, C.A.; and Los Angeles, C.A.; in addition to select Macy’s and Dillard’s department stores. The signature “Too Faced Loves Kipling” bag will only be available at Sephora, Sephora.com, Ulta stores and toofaced.com.

If I'm on your shopping list, I think I have made it clear what I want in my stocking, and it includes a monkey wearing a bustier!

Product Review: Body Shop Monoi Miracle Oil

I grabbed a bottle of The Body Shop Monoi Miracle Oil in an airport while in route to visit family in Arizona. I figured it would come in handy since I'm not much of a dry-climate person. That might be an understatement - I just don't do dry climates at all. My sinuses act up, my skin freaks out, and I'm usually just all around miserable.

However, at least one of my problems was solved by this oil: my skin stayed perfect. No flaky patches or irritating itchy dryness. And the smell was absolutely lovely. A light scent of gardenia, which ended up paring quite well with my Michael Kors fragrance. Perfection.

I still use it quite a bit, especially as a bath oil. A few drops in my tub, and I'm certain to have soft touchable skin after I get out.

Available only at the Body Shop.

Product Review: Patricia Wexler MMPi.20 Skin Regenerating Serum

I picked up a sample of MMPi.20 Skin Regenerating Serum the last time I was in Bath and Body Works. I tucked it away and didn't give it a whole lot of thought until I realized that I had run out of the eye cream that I was previously testing. And I am glad I did. This is one amazing skin cream. Here is what the website has to say:

  • MMPi.20™ anti-aging technology blocks the damaging effect of all 20 known MMPs (skin destroying enzymes that break down production of collagen and cause skin to sink, sag, and wrinkle) and prevents the production of new MMPs, correcting the signs of aging you see today and preventing future damage
  • Boosts skin's own regenerative powers to diminish the visible signs of aging
  • Visibly reverses the lines, sink and sag
  • To use: After cleansing, gently massage serum evenly over face, neck, and decollete 2 times daily
I just used it on my eye area, as I'm always weary of putting anything new on my breakout-prone face. But even there I was impressed with the serum. It had a definite mattifying effect, which is always a bonus for me. Plus, it make my skin feel super soft. I even had other people touch it after applying it just to make sure I wasn't dreaming the whole thing. And it caused absolutely no problems for my skin at all - in fact, I do believe it did a great job kind of plumping up the few smile lines I have around my eyes.

Just FYI, the website says that a jar of this good stuff goes for $150. That wasn't the case at my local Bath and Body Works. The jar available for sale there was $55.

Need Some Halloween Jams for Your Costume Party?

There is talk in the air among my friends about a costume party. I'm not too sure about all of that, but I was browsing around today for some funny music, and thought that I needed to share this goodness with all of you. Who knew there was Jewish Halloween music?

Book Review Tuesdays: The One Hundred by Nina Garcia

Book Review Tuesdays is going to be a permanent fixture here at Daily Dose of Coffee. There are so many fabulous books on style and beauty out there, that there is plenty to choose from. Since I make a point of buying far too many books, why not share them with you? So you'll get the good, the bad, and the ugly every Tuesday. And don't forget, I'm giving away five copies of Carmindy's book, Positively Beautiful. You have until 10/18 to enter.

I picked up The One Hundred: A Guide to the Pieces Every Stylish Woman Must Own because I'm a huge Nina fan. She dissects everything so well on Project Runway, and you can tell by the way she carries herself that she knows style when she sees it. Plus, I'm on a quest to clean out my closet of "fast fashion" and really focus on the important basics that will last much longer than a season or two. While I want to follow some trends, what I really need are the stylish basics that I can build on for years. Nina does an excellent job giving you the breakdown on what will last and last. There aren't any trends here, just solid basics that would work in anyone's wardrobe.

She has certainly taught me a few tricks. While I never thought I'd own anything remotely like a "driving shoe," her sound advice has led me to purchase my first pair of Tod's shoes. Heaven! Why did I not have these before? And they are truly classic - I will have them forever.

All the basics are here, from jeans to trenchcoats, aviator glasses to statement necklaces. While she always seems to focus on high end items, there are a few instances where she directs you to more economical choices such as H&M and Gap. I totally agree with her that most fashion jewelry doesn't need to be real, although if you can afford it, more power to you! But the beauty of accessories is that they don't always have to be top of the line.

You will probably learn a bit too. Why is Missoni so popular? Why is a Hermes scarf so expensive? How did the famous Pucci print become so popular? Nina addresses all of these without being laborous about it. Quick, to the point, and easy to understand is the name of the game here. At first I thought it wasn't going to be all that informative, but by the time I put it down, I realized I had a lot more information than I had before I picked it up, and I was entertained at the same time.

Overall, an excellent book to read if you are interested in personal style versus fashion. The two can be so very different sometimes!

Product Review: Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash Daily Scrub

If you are looking for the highest concentration of beta hydroxy acid (BHA or salicylic acid) on the market Neutrogena Oil Free Acne Wash Daily Scrub is for you. BHAs are the only known agent that can penetrate through the layer of sebum (oil) and get down into the pore to prevent and treat breakouts. The bonus with this scrub is that it also has physical exfoliants that, while probably ineffective on actual pore cleansing, certainly feel good. And those physical exfoliants still work well to clear away dead or flaky skin, so that's well worth it. This is my go-to scrub, and I use it in conjunction with the Oil Free Acne Wash. The grapefruit one is exactly the same as this, only it has a fruity grapefruit scent. Perfect for those of us who deal with acne on a daily basis, and especially those of us who have adult skin.

What I'm Watching: The Rachel Zoe Project

Are you all watching the Rachel Zoe Project on Bravo? I can't decide if I absolutely love her or hate her. I mean, she's clearly talented, and her taste is almost always spot on, plus she's given me some new great places to vintage shop in New York. But there is just something about her. Maybe it's the cutsey catch phrases ("I die."). Or maybe it's the "I'm kind of ditzy, but I'm super-cute" attitude about her. Or maybe it's her inability to manage her finances. I'm not sure! But either way, I'm watching every single episode.

Pat McGrath Makes a Fantastic Look for Max Factor

Pat McGrath is a world-famous makeup artist, and is currently the Global Color Cosmetics Creative Design Director for Proctor and Gamble. She consistently puts out some amazing looks for the brands, including Cover Girl and Max Factor. This time, she created this look for Max Factor and their new spokesmodel, Giselle Bundchen. As we all know, the smokey eye comes back big in the fall and winter, and this one is just a touch outside of the traditional smokey eye, enough to really make those eyes pop.

Here is what she used:

I think it's the white shade in the middle of the eyelid that makes it unique. Positioned right where the light hits, it's almost a highlighting shade that breaks up the darker shades that make up the rest of the eye.

What do you think? Will you try it?

Ask Me Mondays: Small Bumps on Upper Arms

Q: I have the most annoying small red bumps on my upper arms and sometimes on my thighs. I know they aren't acne, but sometimes I can squeeze them and something comes out. I know, that's gross. But what are they, and what can I do about them?

It really sounds to me like you have a very common inherited skin disorder called keratosis pilaris. You're right: it's not acne! And don't squeeze them - it doesn't help, and it can lead to scarring if you're not careful.

Here are the basics on keratosis pilaris: it's very, very, very common - up to 50% of adults have it. Sometimes it looks red and inflamed, sometimes it just looks like goosebumps. It can get worse in the winter when the air is dry, but not always. Sometimes it makes your skin feel like sandpaper, if the bumps are small and fine. Basically, there is no one identifying symptom, other than bumps, that makes this stand out.

How do you get it? You inherit it. Thanks, mom! Your skin in the problem areas creates too much of a certain protein called keratin which then builds up in and around the hair folicule, causing the clog which leads to the bump. It is a completely harmless condition, and sometimes goes away completely on it's own as the skin produces less keratin due to aging. Others have it all their lives.

Treatment is usually somewhat ineffective, but I wonder if this is because people eventually stop the treatment altogether. Given the nature of this disorder, you would have to commit to a long term treatment using alpha and beta hydroxy acids which help clear the bumps, and moisturizing, which helps calm the dry skin which can make the situation worse.

Many sources seem to think products containing lactic acid work the best, although it seems that any kind of AHAs are recommended across the board. BHAs (salicylic acid) is also thought to be helpful to penetrate inside the bumps, but may be unnecessary on already dry skin.

One of the few keratosis pilaris treatments I have found is the DERMAdoctor Keratosis Pilaris Regimen Kit. You use the DERMAdoctor KP Duty Dermatologist Body Scrub with Chemical + Physical Medi-Exfoliation in the bath or shower to cleanse and exfoliate dry skin, and then use then apply DERMAdoctor KP Duty Dermatologist Moisturizing Therapy For Dry Skin to arms and/or legs or where needed twice daily or as often as needed. Both items come in the set.

An extremely helpful site for you is here: Help for Keratosis Pilaris

Why, Yes, I'm Addicted To Etsy

Aren't you? I mean, have you seen some of the absolutely amazing and creative things over there? This is my most recent find, and I'm wearing it on my neck right now. I love it so much I don't want to take it off.

It's by Kristen's Custom Creations, and you need to get on over there right now and look at her pretty things! I got it in a matter of days, and it is exactly as it looks, in fact, I'm pleased as punch over the quality. The chain is super high quality and it says "Fierce." Please. What else does a girl really need?

She'll stamp anything you want, so don't be shy. Announce your personality to the world.

Addicted to Accessories: Putting it All Together

I will admit it: I'm an accessories junkie. Typically, my clothes are pretty basic: in the fall and winter I wear a lot of black and gray dresses, especially sweater or knit dresses and black pants. I'll occasionally throw on a bright shirt to offset the black I have going on below, but not always. Black is just my standard uniform for the colder months. But what I love to do is make the look stand out by using fun accessories. Big, layered, chunky necklaces can really make a boring sweater dress and leggings look fun. I'm addicted to purses and shoes, so grabbing a matching scarf or headband to add to the accessories fun is not that hard. Since I can't afford to buy a new fall/winter wardrobe every year (and really, who can? Aren't we in a recession?) I can usually afford to replace my accessories every season, or at least add to it.

While I love top of the line accessories like anyone else does (and I'll admit to never skimping on handbags and shoes), you can find me in many accessories stores that carry low-priced jewelry. Usually those places have tons to choose from and it is so fun to mix and match it all up and walk out of there with tons of stuff for about $50. Due to my line of work and the fact that I have kids, it's not uncommon for my jewelry to break, so I tend to save the top of the line stuff for special occasions.

I have run across an online accessory store that totally understands my accessories philosophy. Not only can you shop for each piece individually, but they sell "looks" which are a few pieces already paired together to get you started. While I'll swap out all kinds of things when it comes to jewelry, I know many people like to keep it coordinated, and Levita's "Look" Jewelry can help you do that.

LevitaOnline.com carries a really cute selection of necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and rings. They also have sets, if that's your thing, and handbag charms if you like those. But to really bring out your inner stylist, go over there and put together your own sets - it's really quite addicting once you get going! Have fun!
