Don’t Even Bat an Eye: The lashes that almost, but didn’t, give me a wink.

My girls and I are always looking for ways to look fabulous. We want ways to accentuate the attributes we love and hide the ones we don't. That being said, I had a wedding to go to a few weeks ago and decided to embark on the journey into the world of Revlon Fantasy Lengths Self Adhesive Eyelashes. I chose the length named "Intensifying", thinking this would be perfect for a semi-formal evening wedding. I am immediately confused by the plastic eyelash applicator. Now, I am not well-versed in the ways of eyelash enhancement, so I opened up my directions and got myself ready. Directions: check. Weird plastic device that claims to be "an applicator": check. Lash Stand with lashes in place: check. You might be wondering where the glue is? Ah ha! No glue needed, which was my initial attraction to these lashes in particular. Seriously, ladies, we all know how complicated things can get with lash glue. You normally need someone else helping and the situation almost always ends with someone throwing their arms in the air, screaming, "I'm DONE." So you can imagine my sheer excitement with these "self-adhesive" beauties sitting on my countertop, just waiting for me to "simply place them on my lash line." The first thing I notice is the silky feel of the lashes. It’s hard to find lashes that feel natural and soft as opposed to thick and manufactured. I measure them against my own lashes and they seem to be a good length, too. I'm fine up until the part where I cannot get the lashes off of my fingertips. They are adhering faster and faster! All the while, I'm trying to "wiggle and press the lashes into the base of my natural lash line".

When I do finally get the lashes to stay in place, I can only manage to get the center to stick. The ends are no longer adhesive due to my earlier battle with fingers. Fabulous. I try with all of my might to re-adhere them but it's a no-go. The lashes will stick no more. They soundly get dumped in the trash, along with their stupid plastic applicator. Now, it does come with an extra adhesive strip that you press onto the lashes for multiple wearings, but truly, that's only if the lashes survive the first wear. Point of the story is this, ladies: Although some products might promise to be "all-in-one", a product that will cut out all of those "useless" steps for you while making you look better than the red carpet, they might be lying. Yeah, I said it. They might just be trying to sell you something. Go figure. They retail anywhere from $5.99-$8.99, which is comprable to the lashes that come with their own bottle of glue. It basically comes down to personal preference. For me, I don't mind the extra steps, as long as I know they work. And provide a fabulous wink for my night out.

The Saga of the Lash Extentions

Recently I had lash extentions put on for the first time. If you follow me on Twitter, you probably heard about it, I was so happy. They were absolutely gorgeous, but not without their problems.

It was a big weekend for me, and I decided since I had parties going on every night starting on Friday and moving right through Sunday (a dear friend of mine was tying the knot), I knew I'd be putting falsies on anyway, so why not try lash extensions?

The process was painless and fast. For both eyes, it only took about twenty minutes. Essentially, the process was to use single lashes (such as the kind you purchase at the beauty supply store) and apply them with tweezers using a most incredible adhesive. At the end of the process I had gorgeous, full, lush lashes that garnered me lots and lots of compliments.

So what could possibly go wrong? Apparently that night, while I slept, I pulled at them. I don't remember doing this, and was shocked to see what happened in the mirror the next morning. On both eyes, half my lashes were off and dangling at a most precarious angle. So, what did I do, besides completely freak out? The worst thing you could possibly do - I pulled at the rest of them. Yes, I did. And that pulled out almost all my real lashes in the process, leaving me with not only no extensions, but seriously sparse lashes to boot. Now I'm working on getting those bad boys to grow back in, which is a separate blog post for another time.

I saw my technician two days later, and she was completely appalled. Apparently, I made a huge mistake pulling on them (obviously!), and should have come right back in for a quick repair job at no extra cost. It would have saved both my extensions and my natural lashes both.

I would do it again, especially if I had as much going on in a short time, since I always wear false lashes to fun events. But I'd keep my hands off and run in for a fix if I ran into problems.

The takeaway from this episode will be not only beautiful lashes for a short time but getting my natural ones to grow back. I'll be a lash expert!

Going Out Eye: False Eyelashes

I thought I'd share my "going out" eyes for you while my husband finishes getting ready. Yes, I can get ready before he does; amazing, isn't it?
So, here is what I have going on this evening:

  • Urban Decay Primer Potion
  • Urban Decay in Sin all over lid
  • Urban Decay in Green Goddess on lower lid and under eyes
  • MAC Fluidline in Blitz and Glitz
  • LORAC Lotsa Lashes mascara
  • Revlon false eyelashes
  • Too Faced Brownies eyebrow pencil
I adore using false eyelashes. I started this practice of mine in high school when I accidentally pulled most of my eyelashes out while trying to curl them (ouch, seriously, it was painful). So I can get them on in a flash, but they really look out of place anywhere except with "going out" makeup. I don't wear them on a daily basis.
I don't really have any favorite brands, I will use them all. Make Up Forever and Mac are at the top of my list, although these are by Revlon, and I like them just as well.
You just have to practice, practice, practice!
