How to Wear it Thursday: Tights

Sweaters, Tights and Boots by retrodiva

We are in a recession, my friends, and I don't know about you, but I can't afford to go out and replenish my winter wardrobe, no matter how much I'd like to. But I am in a position to spice up my wardrobe by purchasing some accessories. In this case, I'm all about tights. They are an economical way to add a pop of color (and brights are so big this year) to your existing wardrobe.

In this example, I used sweater dresses as my foundation, because I have quite a few of these. They are so comfortable and warm to wear, and you can layer them up. Last year I stuck with black tights only, but this year I'm investing in a few pairs of bright, colorful tights, and I'm mixing them up with my neutral colored dresses.

Some other accessory ideas to think about: jewelry, scarves, tights, and belts. All of these can be a great way to refresh an outfit from last season without a huge outlay of cash.

Why, Yes, I'm Addicted To Etsy

Aren't you? I mean, have you seen some of the absolutely amazing and creative things over there? This is my most recent find, and I'm wearing it on my neck right now. I love it so much I don't want to take it off.

It's by Kristen's Custom Creations, and you need to get on over there right now and look at her pretty things! I got it in a matter of days, and it is exactly as it looks, in fact, I'm pleased as punch over the quality. The chain is super high quality and it says "Fierce." Please. What else does a girl really need?

She'll stamp anything you want, so don't be shy. Announce your personality to the world.

Addicted to Accessories: Putting it All Together

I will admit it: I'm an accessories junkie. Typically, my clothes are pretty basic: in the fall and winter I wear a lot of black and gray dresses, especially sweater or knit dresses and black pants. I'll occasionally throw on a bright shirt to offset the black I have going on below, but not always. Black is just my standard uniform for the colder months. But what I love to do is make the look stand out by using fun accessories. Big, layered, chunky necklaces can really make a boring sweater dress and leggings look fun. I'm addicted to purses and shoes, so grabbing a matching scarf or headband to add to the accessories fun is not that hard. Since I can't afford to buy a new fall/winter wardrobe every year (and really, who can? Aren't we in a recession?) I can usually afford to replace my accessories every season, or at least add to it.

While I love top of the line accessories like anyone else does (and I'll admit to never skimping on handbags and shoes), you can find me in many accessories stores that carry low-priced jewelry. Usually those places have tons to choose from and it is so fun to mix and match it all up and walk out of there with tons of stuff for about $50. Due to my line of work and the fact that I have kids, it's not uncommon for my jewelry to break, so I tend to save the top of the line stuff for special occasions.

I have run across an online accessory store that totally understands my accessories philosophy. Not only can you shop for each piece individually, but they sell "looks" which are a few pieces already paired together to get you started. While I'll swap out all kinds of things when it comes to jewelry, I know many people like to keep it coordinated, and Levita's "Look" Jewelry can help you do that.

LevitaOnline.com carries a really cute selection of necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and rings. They also have sets, if that's your thing, and handbag charms if you like those. But to really bring out your inner stylist, go over there and put together your own sets - it's really quite addicting once you get going! Have fun!

I've been having days lately where this would be absolutely perfect to wear. It would save me actually having to say it or Twitter it every few minutes. (via Mel212)

Spoon Fed Art

Isn't it absolutely gorgeous? Spoon Fed Art began when designer Karin Collins started experimenting with collage while in therapy for an eating disorder. Those experimentations turned into beautiful, wearable art. Karin has even designed a logo pendant for the National Eating Disorders Association, and it's absolutely gorgeous, like everything else she does.

The pendant seen here is one of my favorites, but I'm not sure I would be able to choose. I've long been a fan, but have not yet purchased one. I must figure out which one suits me the best!

And right now, they are sponsoring a giveaway, because it is the giveaway season, I think. Join the mailing list before June 1, and be automatically entered to win a pendant. Buy a pendant and get an extra entry. Good luck, and do share which pendant you won! At the very least, help me decide which one I want!

Lockets for Mother's Day

So, I've decided to hop on board the locket trend and get my mother one for Mother's Day. My first stop was Overstock, since they tend to have really good products that are a bit more traditional. Mom doesn't follow my sense of style.

iconI personally thought this one was super cool. But I doubt Mom would think so. So, I suppose I'd better stop shopping for me.
Then I found this one for my daughter:

But I realized I wasn't shopping for her either, and besides: it's not very rock and roll. She's not a a traditionalist at all.
I love this one:

But it's kind of out of season. So then I went to Etsy.
